I was honestly surprised. A good surprise too. I expected just some sex between a Fallen and a vampire. Nothing much. Just some honest-to-God blood filled sex. Some violence for sure. A couple bad-guys. Wings. Again, nothing exactly new. Clichéd even. But it was more than that. There's actually some depth in these characters. And they're not exactly kosher either. They kill, they maim, they torture. I didn't get a fragile and sparkly vampiress unable to protect herself and scared of blood. I got an ass-kicking one. I didn't get a sweet and cute little angel either. I got a true Fallen too. What more could I want? Well...action. Lots of it. I did get a little upset with them always getting sidetracked with sex but I got over it and enjoyed it anyway. Wasn't perfect but surely entertaining. Good ending too.

Incredibly unbelievable but sweet and cute too. Not sure if that was the intention tho. I think it was supposed to be more hot and sexy but for me it was only slightly so. The world-building is not bad,per se, because it's very creative for sure but it's also quite incomplete. Barely scratches the surface and it's a real shame. It had great potential too.
The characters while likeable seemed pretty full of themselves and shallow, even Terese which is weird because I'm pretty sure she was supposed to be this strong yet fragile heroine.

Anyway if you don't care about depth, this book is for you.

Review: Sweet Hell

Sweet Hell by Rosanna Leo

If you can ignore the clichés and the silliness, you'll probably be able to enjoy the levity of the story and characters. Able to appreciate this couple and their tumultuous but sweet relationship. The funny quips. The shared laughs. But, if like me, you can't really look past all that with a clear conscience...well. The silliness in this case is both good and bad. It can come across as shallow and desperate after some time. You want things to get serious but they don't. Not really. And they "fall in love" in less than a week. While they're in Hades! Surrounded by death and brimstone (not really but you get the point) and somehow manage to have sex there. Twice. Then, she's an idiot and sacrifices herself for Eurydice. He, of course, sacrifices himself for her. Suffering and angst ensues. Add some stupid rule Hades remembers to enforce (disguised as helping) and ta-ta-ta-tum. They're free, in love and going to live happily ever after. Syrupy sweet.

Review: The Rebuilding Year

Did I like every single line or word in this novel? Probably not but I did like the hopeful feeling throughout, the comprehensive world-building, the characters background...just how everything worked well together. Mostly, I simply liked John and Ryan together. I still feel like the author could've gone further in their relationship but what was shown was definitely good enough. They were really good together. Obviously more than physical. A feeling of wholeness difficult to find and recreate. Mark's presence only made it more real as well because he wasn't there just to look pretty in this gay couple's quaint and perfect life. He was there. He had problems. And he was an important part. Very well done. Good HEA.

Review: North of Need

I really liked it but it's so full of clichés and patronizing behaviour towards women (or maybe just humans in general) that I can't, in good conscience, rate this above three stars. A real shame too because I finished this with a great sense of happiness I haven't found in quite some time. I wasn't accosted by love triangles, ex-boyfriends/girlfriends or some sort of fictional conflict. It was mostly smooth sailing and I appreciated that more than I thought I would. The only "hiccup" was when he was hurt by the heat and even that was mostly okay. It was solved quickly and never reached idiotic proportions like in most books. I was a little disappointed by the lack of more Gods tho.

Overall, if you can avoid being pissed by all the scheming Owen does at first, their rushed love affair and Megan's inability of being happy without a man, give it a shot. You may be surprised.

Finally.

This was a hard read for me. I was hopeful when I started but didn't stay that way for long. Seemed to rely way too much in certain clichés and started to drag. The only saving grace for me was the mystery. I never really suspected Ruth (or whatever her name was) 'till the very last pages. That part was definitely well done. The investigation? A complete bust. The main character is a dressmaker and, like her friends and family said constantly, I think she should keep her day job. She completely sucked at the rest. She was totally clueless, naive and dumb. Her "romantic interest" is equally unimpressive. Simply boring. No sparks whatsoever except for the ones she claims to feel. Of course her dead grandmother approves of him so she'll probably end up with him anyway. The so-called Southern charm? Nonexistent. I, for one, was not charmed. I think I only liked one character in the whole book. The sheriff. Which is totally weird because he showed up only a couple of times and only said a couple of words. Then again, maybe that just shows the awesomeness of the other characters. Not.

Overall? Probably a waste of time except for the murder mystery.

After reaching the end of this story I still can't really say I know Dylan, understand his choices or fears and joys, but I can definitely say I liked him immensely. Alec, on the other hand, was a little more easier to pick out. He wanted someone to share his life with. He may not have gone about the whole thing in the right way but his goal never changed. But Dylan...a whole lot different because he himself hadn't figured it out yet. I really loved him. Warts and all. Such a wonderfully flawed character. A real treat to try to know. Alec was just perfect for him. Brilliant with a side of humility and geekiness. Well done.

The plot is not original. Gay guy falls for "straight" guy. Straight guy doesn't think himself gay and doesn't want to be in a relationship with one. Nothing new, right? But the comprehensive background, the world-building and these characters made all the difference. Seriously well thought out. Great support characters. Good HEA.

Comprehensive and fun but there were some character traits that annoyed me like Hell too. I hated how Pres was so depressed at first barely able to care of himself, how Ric acted with him before their break up and also how Ric lusted after Blair at first glance. While there were some deep feelings in this story, there was also a lot of shallowness and childish behaviour. Not at all how I imagine three grown men to act towards each other no matter their sexual preferences. I simply cannot swallow past the yelling, the whimpering and the tears. These men cried a lot. It feels unnatural and, honestly, quite offensive too. I did like most of it though.

Comprehensive, complex and long. So very long. But good. There were certain things I didn't like. Things that seriously pissed me off. Things that made me sad. And then there were things that gave me hope, made me laugh and made me happy. Overall? Those last impressions were the ones I kept with me when I finished. I can't really remember the bad and that's all I really want when I finish a book. Well done. I really liked how everything turned out good for all of them, if not perfect. Good HEA.

I don't know if I should feel grateful or disappointed by the fastest and easiest sex scenes I've read so far. Can't really say I understand the reasoning of needing a condom for the sex after a BJ without one either. Nice touch with the extra-large size of condom too. Subtle. And the rest of the plot? Kinda like On Deadly Ground with Steven Seagal. Only Steven Seagal kinda plays both roles and isn't gay. Can't say I'm impressed.

Okay...Middle of a sex scene and this gem pops out:

Chad - "Geez, you licensed to carry that thing?"
Sonny - "Armed and dangerous, babe."

Was this supposed to be sexy? 'Cause I laughed the Hell out of it 'till my vision was blurred by tears. Christ. And what's with all the whimpering in sex? I always picture a grown man weeping and whining whenever that word is used. I kid you not. Not sexy.

Now to the technicalities:

Background and world-building are not bad. The characters are pretty comprehensive and there is no insta-love. That alone cheered me up immensely. But there was some writing issues. Kind of hard to discern who was speaking sometimes...some grammar mistakes and repetitive dialogue too. Maybe there was more I didn't notice. Not sure.
While it doesn't detract terribly from the story, it does take attention elsewhere and made me loose some enjoyment because of it. Kind of weird how we never get to the end of a sex scene either. Alas, not the end of the world though so I'm not terribly disappointed. Just resigned I guess. Good HEA nevertheless. Very sweet and appropriate.

The first few pages went pretty much without a hitch and so I was a little bored. And then bam! The email fiasco. Wow. The whole thing was a pretty sh*tty thing to do. Incredibly selfish and hurtful, specially to someone you love. The other things, I could deal with. They didn't know each other, Bero was there pretty much against his will and he tought Dave was just another guy he had to help. But after being together, after exchanging vows of love and trust... Awful act. Leaving afterwards just made it even worse. The rest? How discouraged they both were in each other absence? How suddenly everything went perfect when Bero returned? Not impressed and kind of a let down actually. I did appreciate the reference to Eric in True Blood tho. Nice touch. Overall, it was entertaining but nothing I'll remember in a few days.

I gotta say I spent most of the time it took me to read this completely confused. One because the Russian words were completely foreign, including their names. I was never able to identify who was who. Two because I didn't know the tale from where this came from and it went right over my head. Nothing was familiar except the whole Eva in ice thing being reminiscent of sleeping beauty but even that seemed quite forlorn and odd. The sex...was just confusing too. I couldn't tell who was doing what and, after a while, I didn't even care. I just wanted it all to end.

Well...the sex was fun. I kinda liked seeing Frazer and Cooper together but the lack of trust and self-assurance with their relationship kinda took the fun out of everything. Became quite pathetic at times. And Frazer's naiveté regarding his twin was grating on my nerves too. Not to mention the way Cooper fell apart when he thought Frazer was guilty. If only they'd talked about it, but, no. Cooper couldn't tell anything because of his job and Frazer was too damn chicken to be honest and explain things. So, while I liked them together, I don't see how they managed to fall in love when they were all so busy not trusting each other. What kind of relationship is that anyway? A depressing one I think.

Not even the sex was fun or interesting. I felt disconnected pretty much from the start and it only got worse towards the end. Honestly? I didn't care for a single character.

Not bad but...I think it was kinda deceiving to mention the Greek Gods and never actually have them show up. I also think the author could've introduced Anthony's truth power without any connection to the Gods at all. That piece of info at the premise just raised my expectations and then basically dashed them when I proceeded to read it. Nothing paranormal about this novel at all and, while reading auras can be presented as a paranormal aspect, it can also be presented as simply a more attuned connection to people and the world around which I think would've been a better approach. Overall? Entertaining but also disappointing, rushed and lacks a certain finesse.

Very good. Different approach to Greek Mythology, namely Hades and Persephone's supposed love story. Good background, thorough world-building and nice research all combined into a lovely criminal mystery and romance. Not exactly what I expected when I grabbed it but I am immensely satisfied. Both Hades and Ti surprised me completely with the complexness of their lives and personalties and it was a real treat. Add a good HEA and it ended perfectly.

I really liked all the characters, maybe except Julie but she ended up redeeming herself, so it wasn't so bad. Victor...well quite a disappointment. Much like the vampire society as a whole. I expected better.

Meh. I think the whole relationship was just...unbalanced. Dysfunctional. I actually liked the beginning, how they waited months instead of days or even hours to be together, but when Riley woke up from his coma? Downhill. Faster than Speedy Gonzalez. His sexual binge was pretty disgusting and his idea that sex was enough to compensate his idiocy and childish behavior was even worse. How Bastian managed to forgive him is beyond me. Seriously. The trust issues alone...Crappy ending too. Kinda like "Do whatever you want. We're bonded. I'll forgive you." And the final piece with Riley's best friend? Even more crappy. Apparently everyone in this story is an idiot who betrays everyone. Not impressed.

I had some difficulty towards Lexis disability. While I can understand how his blindness (in more ways than one) could really be a problem for him considering how much he relied on it before, I did have some issues with his pity filled voice. I also don't understand why he always seemed to be okay with his limitations. Not those caused by his disability but by his own making. I'd also have liked a more thorough view of their world and background. There were a lot of holes I had to fill with my own musings and some didn't make sense. Were vampires dead or alive? Because they had heartbeats. Why were werewolves stronger? Kind of weird, that one Where were Bryce's family? Did he have none? What? Too much unknown and not enough trust. Enjoyable but not good. Nice HEA tho. And the sex was pretty hot.

I enjoyed the overall look of this story. I liked how Frankie didn't immediately bed or accept Merrick. How he tried to get to know him better. How he tried to have a relationship with him . How he tried to wait until he trusted him.

Did you notice how I said tried and not achieved? That's because he tried but never really made it work. While he did manage to wait a couple days, I still think it was too rushed. I understand the appeal of mates, of having someone destined to be all you ever hoped to, someone who'll never leave you or betray you. I do get it. It's all very perfect and neat. But it's also full of rules and expectations and you always get these types of fast "relationships" where no work is needed. Every single thing just fits right and you don't get to adjust or fight or be scared and that...just feels fake and plastic.

So...while I enjoyed it, I didn't love it. Wasn't believable. Wasn't even exciting because I already knew how it ended. Same thing with the sex. Been there, done that. Not impressed.

And Merrick was quite dull for a master vampire too.

Don't really know what to make of this. While I liked it well enough, I guess, I also had some troubles with the execution. I could forget the mistypes, the grammar mistakes and other issues with the writing. I really could. They weren't overwhelming or that often so it wasn't really a big deal. But the way the romance was written was much of a turn off for me. I really didn't see why they liked each other at all. Besides coming from totally different sides of life, they only had sex. Okay, so it was only in their dreams but that doesn't make a relationship. Not even close. What did they see in each other? I still can't answer that even after finishing it. So...while I give props for the plot and the world-building, I wasn't impressed. And the ending did nothing for me.

Not to mention how the damn thing ended. Cherry on top of the cake. But, amazingly enough, I liked Aaron. Only reason this gets a two star rating at all.

For me, one of the best books this author has written so far. I don't usually enjoy YA. The angst, dramatics and childish behaviour all plotting to keep me away but, amazingly enough this book was good. Maybe because it started with the main characters as small children instead of plunging us directly into teenage-hood. I don't know. The point is that it's well done. The background was comprehensive without being boring, the world-building was good and the support characters actually supported the main couple without suffocating them. Overall it is well balanced out and a real treat. Good HEA as well, modest but meaningful.

Of course it ended in a sex scene. Wouldn't have been right in any other way considering 90% of this book was sex and the rest was talking and over-dramatics. Like I said in my updates, the addiction problem was a turn off and not really necessary besides being unrealistic. But I enjoyed the rest of it all very much. Not really anything other than glorified erotica but still good. I was slightly disappointed by the end tho. After the hysterics of the addiction I kinda expected a big bang or revelation and only got one orgasm or three (not literally, you pervs!).

A+ for the sex, B- for the rest.

Not sure if I should laugh it all off or complain incessantly about the over-dramatic use of the words "Yours", "Mine", "Need" and "Mate". And the sex scenes... I like sex in my books. A lot. But even I was a little disgruntled by the ridiculous amount of sex in this story. It was...truly appalling because it never ended. There was literally no rest for the wicked. About 98% of this book is sex. Everywhere. The other 2% was just to give us some impression of plot. Not well achieved either. If you do read it solemnly for the sex though..you'll be in high Heaven for sure. I wasn't.

I started reading this but wasn't much into it to tell the truth...so I went back to read the premise. I hadn't before 'cause it was part of a series I'd been following so, why bother? I'll tell you why I should have. This book has the most clichéd premise I've read this year. In the first book, Pestilence falls in love with Bart while treating him for an unknown disease. Not great but I liked the plot well enough to finish. In the second book, War finds a soldier dying and saves him. While helping Russel recover they fall in love. Better written so I was kind of hopeful but still...

* Pestilence falls for a man dying of a unknown disease;
* War falls for a soldier dying in a war;

Way too clichéd for this author to make Famine fall for a starving man, right? Wrong. That's exactly what this story is about.

And I have to admit, while I have some morbid curiosity trying to push me to finish this, I'm not doing it. It's not worth my time. Not really.

I gotta admit I don't have much faith regarding paranormal with this author. Contemporary is usually good but anything remotely fantastic and her books often crumble under pressure. This book is slightly better but not by much either. There are a number of incongruities and confusing issues and the background is too scattered to understand fully and while the characters are interesting, we don't really get to know them. Bart spends much of the time either unconscious or hallucinating and Pestilence is often absent or unwilling to answer questions. Overall, it's a good premise but the execution never reaches its full potential and it's a real shame.
