Review: The Demon in Me

The Demon in Me
The Demon in Me by Michelle Rowen

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Wow. This was so weird I actually found it to be fun. And I liked Darrack a lot. It's kind of a cliché someone touched by light to be in love with someone touched by the dark but I enjoyed it a lot. I did expect Darrack to be less good actually, for him to be more evil. Strange, right? Can't help it though...and Eden is so naive. Boy, I really do wonder how she managed to survive without help for so long, specially considering she's a nephilim. Shouldn't have someone noticed that before now? I actually felt sorry for Selina. I was kind of hoping for the curse to be broken. Oh well. Now isn't it a little out of the way for her to be a nephilim and a black with at the same time? Shouldn't it be impossible or something? Anyway I so want to read the next one. The plot is incredibly captivating even if the writing isn't perfect, which it isn't.

Review: Gambling On Maybe

Gambling On Maybe
Gambling On Maybe by Fae Sutherland

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Well, that was disappointing. I never did like those gays that feel the need to be all glitter and crap every day of the week but I thought I'd give it a shot so I picked this anyway. And it wasn't bad. Zach, the glittery guy wasn't that annoying and I liked Stephen. But then the story ended precisely when it was getting interesting and I don't get why and now I'm pissed I bothered at all. It was a waste of my time.

Review: Goblins, Book One

Goblins, Book One
Goblins, Book One by Melanie Tushmore

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I didn't particularly like the 1st story. Reminded me too much of slaves, seemed like Wulf wasn't much more than a glorified servant instead of a lover in equal footing and importance. He did all the chores in the house, didn't have anything of his and was basically on a leash (almost literally) and no matter how much you point out someone's pleasure, it's still considered rape if, in the beggining, the person didn't want to do it. I admit in this book it wasn't particularly clear but the notion still stands. I was, however, masterfully entertained by the 2nd story though. I liked Quiller much more than his brother Wulf. He was more assertive, confident and funny. While Wulf seemed to somehow expect to serve someone better than him, Quiller simply assumed charge without actually being obnoxious or hateful. He was vulnerable in his love for Cashel but not in any other aspect which I liked very much. It was fun reading his pranks and even his punishments but more importantly how everything faded in his eyes when Cashiel was around.

Review: Illumination

Illumination
Illumination by Rowan Speedwell

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

One of the most weird couples out there, each one with its own set of problems but so in love with one another they just can't seem to give up and be apart. Really sweet and yet sorrowful for what they had to lose to be happy. I didn't understand much of Miles actions or feelings but I did recognize his love for Adam and it was beautiful seeing them both passing obstacles to be together. Very hopeful and adorable to read. Also loved the happy ending. Glad Miles was finally working on his issues and see Adam stop being afraid of showing his true self.

Review: The Keeper

The Keeper
The Keeper by Hollis Shiloh

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Well this novel was surprisingly good. Not to mean I'm surprised by the author but actually surprised I found a good romance story after spending the last two days being disappointed by other books. The romance was very sweet, slow and intense and just plain hopeful. The writing was good and managed to describe perfectly the two main characters and their relationship. Very enjoyable despite being relatively short. It was also somewhat incomplete for me because I can't help wondering if they'll eventually catch the smugglers who tried to kill Artemas. Nevertheless, it was a great read.

Review: Mate of Two Vampires

Mate of Two Vampires
Mate of Two Vampires by Dakota Dawn

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I'm stupefied by the use of certain words like minid!ck, man-hug and other terms like that. What the hell is a man hug by the way? And I'm pretty sure minid!ck is slightly derogatory. Why not simply say clitoris? Makes no sense. The guy is a trangender not a freak. Although I gotta admit I was quite fascinated with these words. Like watching a train wreck, you know it's gonna end badly but just can't tear your eyes away. Apart from that...I wasn't much entertained by this novel. Most things went right over my head and the sex scenes weren't that exciting. It was all very fast and impulsive.

Review: Devil at the Crossroads

Devil at the Crossroads
Devil at the Crossroads by Cornelia Grey

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Well I wrote a pretty nice review on all the good things this novel offers and I also complained about the ending and my mixed feelings about it. Regretfully, the light went out before I could publish so this is it:

This reinterpretation of the classic faustic myth of making the pact with the Devil at a crossroads is very well done. It was entertaining, intriguing and the rhythm of the story really kept us in the edge until the very end. It was mostly a tale of redemption, sorrow and heartbreak and lastly of that bright light at the end of the tunnel. The ending did annoy me a little though because it was open and not very clear. I also thought the shifts of time were not that necessary but that's more personal taste than anything else. I am a little sorry I won't be able to read about their encounters in the future. I guess I expected a more tangible end something to hold on to.

Apples and Regret and Wasted Time
Apples and Regret and Wasted Time by Cornelia Grey

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I was all for a little sexy time and instead got a roller-coaster of emotion with a sad ending. It was really depressing. Good but depressing. I can honestly say though the author has made good progress from book to book. The writing is more put together and clear and easy to follow.

Review: The Mercenary

The Mercenary
The Mercenary by Cornelia Grey

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

The plot in itself was inviting, entertaining and exciting. The writing should have seen more work though. It was difficult to follow and sometimes even understand and marred the flow of the story making it seem a little broken and unfinished. There was also no world building done whatsoever. You were dropped in the middle of action trying to work your way through small clues and sometimes you couldn't even understand if the characters were thinking things or actually speaking out loud. It was confusing to say the least.

Review: Cat's Claw

Cat's Claw
Cat's Claw by Amber Benson

My rating: 0 of 5 stars

I have no idea if this book got better at the end...maybe it did. I just couldn't manage to read it to find out. Calliope Reaper-Jones is one of the whiniest women I ever had the displeasure of reading. She's insecure (which wouldn't have chafed me much if it was casual instead of ever present), naive (again not that annoying except she coupled that with dumbness) and incredibly pitiful. She spent all her life wanting to be normal and rejected her whole family for it. As far as I'm concerned she should've come to some sort of acceptance of her situation and made the best of it, instead of crying over her awful fate again and again. Most of all, she was/is so miserable I think she unconsciously tries to make everyone else around her as miserable as her. She acts like a child. A very spoiled one. Like if things don't happen the way she wants them to then she doesn't need to accept or even acknowledge them. How idiotic is that? Life isn't going to stop just because you're being a class A a*hole. But that's not the worse...Yes there is worse. Her family actually enables her because they don't even try to call her attention on it. They let her get away with anything.

I guess considering this behaviour is not exactly new (it was obvious throughout the whole 1st novel) I shouldn't sound so shocked but I am. I expected better after the events in the 1st novel. I expected growth. I expected mourning because Daniel died to save her. I expected her to try with her family because she almost lost them. I expected her not to act so damn self-centred. I, apparently, expected too much.

* I will not be reading the remaining books of this series.

Review: Theirs to Keep

Theirs to Keep
Theirs to Keep by Maya Banks

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Was it really necessary to make this woman go through such violence 3 times in less than a year? First she was beaten, raped, shot and left for dead. When she was trying to rebuild her life, which was considerably difficult because she had amnesia, the office where she works gets vandalized and torched with her inside. And because that wasn't enough...a guy attacks when she gets home a couple days later. More bruises and broken ribs. Really?

I did like the way she tried to overcome all this though. Cade and Merrick really gave her a great support group for her to lean on and it made a huge difference in her recovery. They really loved her and it showed every day in every way.

I am wondering now who this Morgan is and how he'll fit. Seems like he loved her when she disappeared and although I'm sorry for him...I don't really like to imagine him interfering with the happiness the three of them have now. They struggled a lot to get there and I think he'll just mess up the balance. Plus I fear Elle can't deal with much more. Although I do agree that she needs to deal with her past soon.

Review: Death's Daughter

Death's Daughter
Death's Daughter by Amber Benson

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

You would think a book about Death would be a little on the grim side (pun intended) but this one was surprisingly humours and even cheery. The writing is good, only some mild errors, and the plot flowed very well. The main character did look slightly more klutz than usual but it was funny to watch so all was forgiven.

However, Callie did seem to forgive and forget way too easily for my tastes. Her mom accused her of kidnapping her father and we never even got to see an apology. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me. Which you did. Otherwise you wouldn't be reading this. *wink*

Anyway, my point is Callie is flawed. I didn't really pay attention when her age was discussed (if it was) but I'm thinking she's way too childish, immature and naive. I guess that it's supposed to come out as cute but it just irritates the Hell out of me (pun intended again!) specially when she acts all smartass without the smart part. Most of the clues went right over her head 'till the very end and what's with all the sex comments? They became way too ridiculous to even pay attention...Is she a virgin? Because she acted like one. Wait. No...I'm disrespecting virgins. Sorry ladies!

IF Callie was inspired by Buffy...you failed. Like miserably. And I'm not even a Buffy fan. So there.

PS: What's with all the crying too? This girl cried like every five minutes. It got old really fast...like five minutes fast.

PPS: Unfortunately I liked the plot too much to give up reading the next book. Crap.

Immortal Warrior
Immortal Warrior by Lisa Hendrix

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Really amazing. Usually I have a difficult time with historical romances due to how men used to treat women and, well, just the basic conditions of that time but for once...I loved it. There were annoying things as one is used to finding in a book but very small ones, not nearly enough to keep me from enjoying this book immensely. I loved knowing Brand, Ivo, Alaida, Ari and Meri. They were awesome characters and I will miss them all deeply.

I liked it although I have some difficulty seeing their happy ending. Then again, I always have difficulty accepting a vampire with a mortal. It's just a heartbreak waiting to happen. The story about a brute of a man and the King's prisoner. How they end up in love and fleeing for their lives. Surprisingly good and hopeful. The story is very sweet and sorrowful most of the time, really picking up the pace only a few handful of pages towards the end. It's the sort of story that usually ends up being sad with a lousy ending. This wasn't. It was a perfect ending and right what these characters deserved. Aric and Gray were really interesting and good and they fought for each other like no other. Very enjoyable.

A Brilliant Ride
A Brilliant Ride by Lisa J. Mitchell

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I was disappointed by the end. I was also disappointed by all the posturing and posing around in the book. There are really nice people around who happen to be rich and this book really painted everyone in a really bad light. Everything also seemed pretty incomplete. Never got to see what happened to Sam or Pen's mother, for instance. Logan also popped out of the blue for me. And what about Brilliant? the premise of the book kind of focus on him but he never really shows up..just more posturing and posing.

Review: Lancelot And The Wolf

Lancelot And The Wolf
Lancelot And The Wolf by Sarah Luddington

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Let's start with the physicalities, shall we? The writing is good and solid. The general plot is long and complex but also intriguing. The romance however really does muddle things quite easily though. I do see the trouble a man could have by loving another one in those times...Hell even loving a woman meant trouble. But I don't really see how adding Fey to the already convoluted situation is going to help and surprise, it hasn't so far... Lancelot did try hard to surpass his fear of consequences long enough to really love Arthur and that was pretty much the high point of the book for me. Nevertheless, I don't exactly see a HEA in their future and that's what will ultimately stop me from reading the next book. I would really be disappointed to learn they end up apart from each other and miserable so I'm simply not taking the chance.

Review: A Deal with the Devil

A Deal with the Devil
A Deal with the Devil by Abby Matisse

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Wow I think I feel a little sick after reading that ending. Surprise, surprise. Everything managed to work itself out miraculously in the last five pages. Even more amazing is not only how gullible Amanda was about her brother but how she still was at the end with Jake. Congratulations. And Jake. I'm sorry but I don't see him as a knight in shining armour, mostly I just see him as a stubborn man who meddled in everything pretending it was for the best just like he complained his grandfather did. Also, I don't see how they were perfect for each other. She wasn't perfect but he annoyed me like Hell and her friend Kate wasn't much better either.

Last but not least...I don't see this book as romantic. I see it like some poor imitation of romance with a healthy misconception that a woman needs a man to be happy, that otherwise her life is not worth it.

Review: Storm Born

Storm Born
Storm Born by Richelle Mead

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

So the basics are: Genie likes sex with a slightly violent touch and has an addictive personality. She also has no intention of becoming pregnant or a queen. She only manages to resist half of that. I admit that, although I like her a great deal, I'm quite concerned about her future. She seems to fight a lot to then ending up doing whatever the guy she's with wants her to do. She either needs to stand up for herself with them or run like hell. I vote for a little of both. Run like hell from Dorian, who I actually like a lot (go figure!) but also suspect will use her in a heartbeat, and stand up to Kiyo, who is trying bit by bit to dominate her. It's slow and soft enough you don't quite see it but it's there nevertheless. That certainly does not bode well for a healthy relationship with either. Apart from the romantic entanglements...the story in itself is quite intriguing and captivating. I sure want to know more. The author did a wonderful job with the writing, it flows really well and has a great rhythm. The characters really pop and you can see so many sides of them. It's great. I specially like their sense of humour, even when it looks like an accident.

Review: Wings of the Storm

Wings of the Storm
Wings of the Storm by Susan Sizemore

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Not impressed. I was doing relatively fine until that info about Daffyd actually being David Wolfe, the guy who put Jane in a time-travel machine without her consent, was dumped in my head. I was marginally accepting Daffyd as a welsh mercenary who was sometimes kind and rough. I was even accepting the fact that he treated her like crap sometimes because it was the 13th century. Women were all treated like crap back then. Then I discover he's the guy who kidnapped her. I'm sorry but regretting that and coming to find her does not make it okay. Her mother broke your nose? My father would have killed you with his bare hands my friend. But that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was Jane forgiving him. The heroine we saw survive countless horrible situations just made a little "tantrum" as David called it and then forgave him. I don't have enough words to explain my dissatisfaction with this ending right now. Seriously.

I don't know why some authors make such an effort to be crude in their works. Books can be hot and sexy without being cheap ladies and gentlemen. Sea Witch by Virginia Kantra

Very interesting. I liked the world building a lot, it was very full of life and intriguing. It was also fun to know. The plot, however...I liked it well enough but it was somewhat sad. Trading seven hundred years of immortality for maybe fifty years of love? It's romantic but really really sad. I guess it made sense for Maggie though because she had lived with a mate before, had lost him and barely remembered him now. Deep down she really just wanted someone with whom to spend her days without the pain of having him die and her live again and again. She wanted stability instead of flowing through life. They did make one awesome couple. Dylan annoyed me as hell though. Too bad Caleb never got the chance to punch him.

Review: Throne of Glass

Throne of Glass
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

So...I'm crazy for only giving this a three star rating right? In my defence, I wasn't wowed by the execution. I liked the plot well enough and even loved Celaena despite her being a cold-blooded killer. I loved Chaol (what kind of name is that anyway?) and Dorian. Nehemia also turned out to be not only incredibly interesting but also a good friend to Celaena. In short? The plot and the characters did wowed me. But I wasn't keen on the way it was written or how long it took for the story to evolve. There are some parts only tolerable because there's Dorian's and Chaol's banter with Celaena to keep us entertained. I also found the lack of more information about Celaena extremely irritating, how I had to learn things from the bad guy trying to kill her. I did enjoyed the world building immensely. It was bright and full of life one moment and dangerous and creepy the next moment. I loved it. I also have to give praise in building a successful love triangle. Dorian and Chaol are both incredible and even though I felt sorry for Chaol when Celaena was with Dorian, I also felt bad when Celaena ended things with him.

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

What's with the whimpers? Seriously! That's all she does where he's concerned. He looks at her and she whimpers. He talks and she whimpers. He touches her and...you get my point. I was really starting to hate the word whimper. Oh and "Say you're mine, Sophie. Say it." and be submissive. Don't challenge him. Not even about wearing panties. Just don't. Because that'll lead into punishment and that'll eventually lead to more whimpers. It's also the first time I've ever read so many times the expression "his c*ck made her womb flutter". I have no idea what that means. The growls were also present in like, every sentence Severn uttered. Really. If this was supposed to arouse me...you failed. The only reason I struggled to the end was because I was actually curious to know if they could find the Dragon's Cup. They did. Thank you.

Springtime in Hades
Springtime in Hades by Kathlena L. Contreras

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Honestly? I thought the story was pretty good until the end. I would've made some arrangements in certain situations but that was more a case of preference instead of a real case of erroneous writing. But I didn't particularly liked the ending. Oh. I liked the happy ever after thing...I just didn't like the sudden jump from helplessness to perfection. It didn't make much sense and it troubled me enough to take some of the happy ending glow right from under me. I also had a problem with Perry's superficiality. I know she's supposed to act like a teenager but I don't really believe a kidnapped girl only remembers to think about how her mother is feeling months after the fact. It's not very natural behaviour no matter how shallow a girl is, plus I don't think that was actually the image the author wanted to give us about Perry. If not for that I would have given a higher rating.

Raphael by D.B. Reynolds

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Although Raphael pissed me off most of the times...I was willing to give this book a four star rating. Then the end rolled out. Are you kidding me? That's the end you give to this book? What's with the scene at the airport? That's so damn ridiculous I don't even have for words for it. I'm thinking it was supposed to be all sad, heart-breaking and a little ironic...It wasn't.
I did enjoy most of the book though. Cyn was a great character, full of courage and strength even knowing how puny she was against vampires and it showed through her words and actions. Even Raphael seemed intriguing beneath all the bluster and predatory side. I also have to say I deeply enjoyed Duncan. But that ending...*rolls eyes*

There's a sex scene every two pages. I'm actually feeling kind of nasty after reading such filth. The plot is actually not bad, it's creative and new and captivating but one gets so sidetracked with so much sex...It's very difficult to even remember anything else. I think about 75% of the sex was pretty much unnecessary.

Angels & Demons by Mandy Rosko

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Surprisingly captivating considering the style of book. It's a fantasy short but one mostly focused in romantic scenes between a male angel and his vampire lover, also a man. It's basically their journey together to surpass not only their differences but also the prejudice between both their races. There's angels, humans, demons and even Lucifer, for a brief moment. It's a little corny and even a little predictable but also intriguing to read. The writing is not bad and I did like the world building.

The Dark God's Bride Trilogy, #3
The Dark God's Bride Trilogy, #3 by Dahlia L. Summers

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I think the author wrote this book intending to deliver a perfect ending to this trilogy. It failed. There were a number of inconsistencies and faults and unaddressed issues like Nala and Trent's situation. Or the overall improbability of a HEA of a mortal female with an abusive dark god. Oh he wasn't physical per se in his abuse but mentally? Yeah, now there's another story. I get that he wasn't exactly himself most of that time but...he was unnaturally cruel even when he was himself. The idea that she fell in love with him in the first place is appalling to say the least. On s bright note though...this was the end so I don't have to read another word.

Review: Dead Spots

Dead Spots
Dead Spots by Melissa F. Olson

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Overall...it was enjoyable but somewhat boring. The characters all acted as if reading from a script. All very comfortable and predictable. The writing was good but not great and I was disappointed to see so many holes in the plot. Also everyone seemed to know more than the main character about her own kind and it was pretty irritating.

I also wanna put in record that Olivia showing up in the end didn't surprise me at all. It was so damn obvious it wasn't even funny. What wasn't obvious was how suddenly Scarlett turned Ariadne into a human. That did blew my mind. Blew Scarlett's mind too because she doesn't know crap about herself. She seems to fear her own shadow. A little disgusting... Again Dashiel's reaction was expected. In fact, his reactions to pretty much everything were expected. He didn't surprise me one bit throughout the entire book. Same with the wolves and witches. Every single one of them cares more about themselves than the people around them. The only ones who seemed to stray a little from this pattern were Scarlett, Eli and Jesse. Kirsten also helped in the end, although I'm guessing it was more due to friendship to Scarlett than actual care for the situation.

I'm known to have a somewhat romantic image of vampires, werewolves and other creatures. Why? I'm guessing I always think after being alive for so many years they should be a little better than regular humans. I'm always hoping under all that predator side there are actually human emotions waiting to be seen by those most confided in. Idk. Maybe I'm expecting too much. Whatever the reason, it was disappointing seeing all these supposedly superior creatures act like toddlers with dolls. I would like to say I was then amazed by the moral shown by the main character but nope. She seems to be very much confused in her role in her own life and it reflects in her actions. Also, apparently, she can't exactly trust anyone. Dashiel's trick about her brother was pretty low. It seems he should've remembered his own advice to Scarlett that people tend to kill those they don't understand or fear. Anyway..I'm still considering reading or not the next novel.

Review: The Renfield Syndrome

The Renfield Syndrome
The Renfield Syndrome by J.A. Saare

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It was so messed up and weird and I just loved it! Rhiannon grows on me more and more right along with Goose and Paine. I can't say the same about Gabriel because he only showed up briefly and it wasn't exactly good although I did miss him a smidge. Apart from that...I felt Rhiannon was way out of her element about 99.9% of the time and yet she prevailed. It was awesome. I so want to keep reading this series!

Review: Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between

Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between
Dead, Undead, or Somewhere in Between by J.A. Saare

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was surprisingly good and I was totally sidetracked with the ending. Bam! Try again next time. I was reading Rhiannon making the deal with the demon and thinking: "Don't do it. You're gonna regret it. Say no." and she goes, says "yes" and gets sent 101 years into the future. What did I tell ya? So now she has to find Gabriel 101 years after they met, pray he's still very much alive or, you know, not dead-dead and deliver a message. I'm also suspicious she's not gonna be sent back to her time right after delivering said message. What a clusterf*ck.

There I was hoping everything was going to be fine...after all she had almost died killing a powerful vamp. Nope. No rest for the wicked and boy was Rhiannon wicked! Can't wait for the next one!

*P.S. The writing is good and insightful and Rhiannon is witty, strong and oh so fun to know.

Review: Tempt the Stars

Tempt the Stars
Tempt the Stars by Karen Chance

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I seriously considered start screaming when that curse hit Pritkin. I mean, come on! Was that really necessary? I thought my heart would give out. I really freaked. Really. And then the epilogue came around and I took a breath. A very long breath.

This book was amazing. It's one of my favourites even though there is not enough Pritkin. There is however a whole book about him, about how to get him back and how to keep him, about all Cassie is willing to do to save him and just how much she wants to.

Then there's a small trip back in time to speak with a Goddess, who I might add should have been a little more kind to her daughter and less of an idiot to the Demon Council, although I am glad to see her more human, with flaws just like everyone else, instead of a perfect woman with insurmountable power.

I should probably say I missed Mircea but..I didn't. Not really. I had noticed how controlling he was becoming in previous books and how he always tried to redirect Cassie's attention away every time she asked a pertinent question and I really didn't like it or miss it. I hope Cassie does realize this soon and puts a stop to it before it's too late.

Unlike others I didn't have a problem with the action scenes either. They were pretty complex though and I do understand where they could become overwhelming and confusing. The novel is packed with action to the brim and in Cassie's style, one action scene is right after the other with no breathing stops to even out.
Also even though I thought the book was spectacular (kind of obvious no?) I did notice the main story arc wasn't much touched. The development was mainly in the personal aspect of the main character and no advance in the war with Tony or the Gods was done.

Overall reaction? I miss some people and think some things should have been mentioned or addressed but I don't much care because I loved it. Every single moment. Even the one with the curse because apparently Pritkin needs to have his soul cursed for Cassie to realize she loves him. *rolls her eyes in frustration*
I am also incredibly anxious and curious for the next novel. I really want to see Cassie save Pritkin while dealing with his father's companionship. What can I say? The demon has his moments.
