Review: Raziel

Raziel
Raziel by Kristina Douglas

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The plot? I loved it. It was different enough from the usual angel/demon thing to make it enjoyable and interesting. The romance? While I appreciated all the effort taken in regards to the sex I wasn't very keen on it. Their first sex scene was way too close to being forced on her for my peace of mind and I can't help thinking she would've chosen differently if she'd been allowed, which she wasn't because he used his powers on her so she couldn't move. For me, it doesn't matter if she ended up enjoying it. A lot. What matters was that she said no and he ignored her. NO is NO. Not a maybe or please make me change my mind kind of thing. So while I enjoyed their bantering and fights? I think she should've found a way to run. Because no matter how you look at it, she never left because she couldn't and not because she didn't want to. For me, that holds more weight that a bunch of hot sex and some destiny.

Review: Angel in Chains

Angel in Chains
Angel in Chains by Cynthia Eden

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Main complain about this book. The sex. Don't get me wrong. It was...sexy, sweaty and boy oh so hot but there is a thing as too much sex and that's what happened here. This couple had sex at every darn turn and it was just ridiculous because it even interfered with the flow of the plot. I'm glad it was so GOOD between them but really? All the time? I actually ended up looking forward for the action scenes with the bad guy. Because Brandt, the bad guy, was one sick f*ck. Gotta give props for such a well built character. Not that the good guys aren't memorable too but this guy? Wow. Sick f*ck I tell you. Now for our main couple, I loved Jade. How could I not when she managed to survive years running from a pack of cats? I couldn't. She was one awesome lady, even as a human. Azrael. Because I didn't read the previous book about Sam and Seline, there was a lot of comments about him and his actions that went right over my head, but I kind of do remember him being a bad guy in the first novel so I wasn't that lost and what can I say, I love a good redemption even if it's not exactly what is expected. So I loved him. A little more slowly and cautiously but there nevertheless. And I honestly cheered when everything went well for them all. Azrael and Jade. Sam and Seline. Tanner. I even hope the good demon doc survives. Am I gonna read the previous book now? Nah. I already know most of what happened and it'd be just a waste of time but I do hope all their happiness lingers.

An Angelic Meeting by Vicktor Alexander

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

First thought when I picked this up? That cover is horrible. Book must be crap. It wasn't total crap but it wasn't all that good either. The way the story was told made it appear incredibly unrealistic and stupid and the fact that Blake simply went along with everything with just a minor freak bothered me to no end. I mean, pregnancy? Angels and demons? Soul-mates? Bonded for eternity? I think it deserved a little more consideration and fear instead of just acceptance specially considering he got shot at right afterwards. Survival instinct anyone?

Last First Kiss
Last First Kiss by Piper Vaughn

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This story is considerably well written specially taking into account how short it is. Not perfect. Almost impossible to cover every aspect in so few pages but it is good enough to be enjoyable and entertaining. The characters are sweet and their romance seemed particularly satisfying. Still too incomplete though to consider a higher rating. Pity. Could've been a good full novel.

Las Palabras De Amor - Words of Love
Las Palabras De Amor - Words of Love by K-lee Klein

My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Not keen on either character much less both of them together. I didn't like how either of them handled their relationship. Lucas letting himself be with someone who used him and his grilfriend for his own desires for years and Danilo for not manning up and decide sooner what he wanted. And his "redemption" wasn't any kind of redemption at all because he ended up almost manipulating Lucas or at least the circumstances with the kid so that they could be together again. Maybe it was supposed to invoke romantic feelings of me or something but I just got angry with Lucas for letting himself get blindsided/handled by the situation and Danilo. A boot up his *ss would've been more appropriate. Both of them. Even if I am a little sympathetic with Lucas.

The Unlikely Vampire by Scarlett Blackwell

Well that was an unlikely story for sure. I'm flabbergasted. Yep. You read that right. I think I'd be a little offended if I hadn't laughed so hard.

Sacrifice by JL Merrow

Hmm. I'm pretty sure it was supposed to be incredibly romantic but it fell flat for me. I even feel a little cheated. Not my thing.

One Last Wish by Josephine Myles

Well. Rushed is the word that first comes to mind but it was so short I doubt there was any time to develop it anyway so I enjoyed it. I liked the compassion and sweetness showed.

Mayan Time by Erik Orrantia

Meh. Didn't do much for me.

Fire Can Make It Rain by Nix Winter

Really? I don't know if I should laugh or cry. Seriously. The dialog was atrocious. Wow.

The Hunter and The Hunted by Stevie Woods

Best story in this book by far. I have a thing for frenemies turned lovers and I just loved this couple. I didn't even mind the lack of sex. Too bad it was just a short.

From the Ashes by Daisy Harris

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I'm not certain I liked this story. I liked the couple, I liked Tomas's family and I even liked Jesse's mom but the romance between both of them? How it developed? How it ended? Not so sure about that. For some reason the way Tomas interacted with his own family always put me on edge. How they were all supposed to be amazingly close but never even knew each other all that well. It's hard to swallow (har har har) and put a huge damper on all this. Also made me look at all of them a little differently, beyond what the author was writing, specially Tomas. Maybe that's why Tomas wasn't all much of a hero for me. Now if you told me of a romance between Michael and Rick...I'd be all over it for sure but nope. Michael will fall for another guy. Bummer. Oh well. There goes my interest.

Bloodlines by Jessica Lee

Good yet not great. The romance was so very rushed and having Evin turn Mason without his knowledge is just something that bothers me to no end. No doubt irresponsible because he almost shifted the first time they had sex. He knew his control wasn't that good when it came to Mason yet he persevered. Not telling the truth. Bound to happen something to get their knickers in a twist. Just a matter of time. The sex...again good but not great. I just couldn't feel their connection.

Mr. Jaguar
Mr. Jaguar by K.A. Merikan

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Not sure if I liked Mike. Jamie was supposed to be all Mr. High and Mighty but he was hiding a huge vulnerability under all that along with some issues regarding high school so I kinda liked him. Mike however wasn't all that convincing with his vulnerabilities. Maybe it was him accepting that weekend for money in the first place. Maybe his showing off regarding his family. Maybe I simply couldn't connect with him. Whatever it was...I just couldn't care about him half as much as I cared for Jamie and I didn't really see why they even liked each other so the romance kinda fell flat for me. I saw no heat between them and the sex was just disappointing.

Cute romance. I really liked both characters even if I mostly thought they were idiots for taking so long to tell they loved each other. So much wasted time. So many misunderstandings. Such fear of rejection and pain. But I did enjoy reading about their time of reconnect. They should've really worked on their communication skills tho. It was truly exasperating how they always managed to misinterpret what the other wanted to express. Good HEA.

Not sure if post traumatic stress can be solved solely by falling in love with a guy but I'm all for it if it works. The romance was really sweet, if not exactly realistic, and I really liked the support characters. The sex was present but more like an afterthought and a normal step into a relationship instead of being forced just for the sake of it. I did found it all to be a little rushed but it was still entertaining enough not to disappoint me.

Not good but not bad either. Maybe lukewarm? I mean this was clearly erotica with a dash of romance and mystery and not much else. Just don't expect anything beyond that and you're good.

Not exactly what I was expecting. Maybe some kind of dragon shifter instead of "real" dragons. Some erotica. Some less boredom regarding customs and politics. I don't know. Something more. But it was entertaining I guess. I did laugh a little and the plot wasn't terrible. Who am I kidding? There wasn't much of a plot but, in this book's defense, I don't think it was supposed too. Review: Velvet Haven

Velvet Haven
Velvet Haven by Sophie Renwick

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

It was...not exactly what I expected. Too much plot and development for a PNR but also way too much angsty romance for a UF and I either expected one or the other and not this convoluted mess. So, while I did enjoy it enough to read it 'till the very end and to admit being slightly curious to know what'll happen later on, I don't think I enjoyed it enough to actually grab the next book and suffer through it. And I can't even say the sex was hot because it was not. It was about as angsty as the rest of the romance between the two main characters and annoyed the living shit out of me. I'm sorry but I simply couldn't put behind me the use of "clenching wombs", "clawing backs", "pink quims" and a vajayjay that "squeezed him like a choking fist" among other lovely visuals. Sorry. Not my thing.

I have no idea what made me think I was gonna like this story but after reading the first pages and ignoring it for more than 6 months I'm DNF'ing this book. No other choice. I don't even remember the few pages I did read. I reached about 20%, if I'm not mistaken, and I couldn't care less how it ended. Review: Blood from a Stone

Blood from a Stone
Blood from a Stone by Cynthia Lucas

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

DNF'ed at 60%. Why? This annoyed the sh*t out of me! God. The MC only tells half truths and Willow is a chickensh*t. She panics whenever something's not as she thinks. Samson's afraid whenever he has to tell her something and, while I'm upset he lies to her constantly, I also understand why he does it. I wouldn't tell her the truth either. She doesn't deserve to know it. The whole romance thing? Not badly written but I'm not seeing them together. Willow annoys me to no end and I'm a little sorry for Samson even tho he's no angel. Then when you think you have a hand at things (boring but you still manage to follow) some Guardians show up to muck things up and your grip on things goes kaboom. Add a couple hundred of descriptions and explanations you could live without and it's not worth more of my time. If, after 60%, I still haven't connected with the characters then I won't. Ever. Nice try but no thanks.

Probably not a shred of originality in this book. Not a single one. Fortunately though it was still compelling enough to keep me entertained. The MC is the typical damsel in distress in all other PNR's except he's a male. The other MC is pretty much like all the other romantic interests out there too except...no, there is no exception here. He's all alpha male. Slightly bad vampire turned good vampire after meeting the love of his life. Meh. Completely predictable. All of it. I did like the sex. Not sure if it was accurate or not but it did get me all bothered. Nicely done. Along with that semblance of plot...I've read worse. Much.

If all the other books from this series have as much plot as this one I really don't understand why it's even named Paranormal Protection Agency because a title like that implies plot. Awakening the Fire by Ally Shields

I think maybe I'm being overly generous with this rating but right now I'm too satisfied with this book to care. The main character, Ari, is slightly naive and imprudent but also brave enough for it not be much of a problem. The rest of the characters are very interesting and surely added a more vibrant feel to the story. That said, while the plot was certainly compelling, it was also kind of hard to follow at times. I think it was supposed to look mysterious but was actually confusing instead. Ideas half-muttered and unfinished. A string of new characters every other chapter. Although I have to admit that was also half the fun. Not knowing everything ahead of Ari. Now, Andreas...Ari's love interest. I'm not sure about him. Both seem to have a lot of preconceptions about each other due to their races and I'm not sure it will end well if they can't get past it. Even if they could...her powers seem to be growing and my guess is they're headed to a collision soon enough. Too bad she doesn't seem to have anyone who can help her and whose trust is not questionable. Also infuriating they never got to kick Sebastian's ass. That would've been awesome. Oh well.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

You know...I liked this book 'till I reached the end. Then? Then I was just depressed as hell. Took the whole joy out of the story. 'Till then I liked the main character, Mira and Danaus. I liked her human bodyguards and, even if I was a little skeptic about Jabari, I certainly didn't hate him and much less expected him to be such a backstabbing *sshole. Now I just want to crawl into my bed, sleep and forget this book. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's very well written and accomplished. The characters were well built. They felt realistic and fun to get to know. The plot was complex and compelling. It was just plain good. But that end really bugged me. I can't believe it ended in such a sour note specially considering the rest of the book wasn't that happy to begin with. Mira's reveal as a weapon that can be controlled by Jabari, Sadira and a couple select more was heartbreaking, frustrating and annoying. I liked Mira because she couldn't be easy pushed around by others. This twist just sucked my curiosity towards the next book right out of me. Such a disappointment.

DNF'ed somewhere between 35% and 40%. Sorry but Jasha made want to throw up. The beast disguised as a roguish alpha did nothing for me. The whole run through the woods was ridiculous and the absolute last straw for me, but worse? The rest of it wasn't much better. I probably should've been insulted by what this author considers perfectly romantic but after meeting Ann (we share a name but that's it), the idiot villager, I think they actually deserve each other. Dark Kiss Of The Reaper by Kristen Painter

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

So...you're telling me the Fates actually made a mistake when they accused Azrael of killing Sara? The Fates? And then decided to compensate said mistake by giving Sara a new life as Lady Death by Azrael's side? Seriously? That's what you went for? About as credible as my bank phoning me and saying they made a mistake and now I have millions in my account.

(I just checked and I'm still as poor as yesterday)

So...the whole plot was just millions shy of credible and I'm not solely referring to the Fades and their mistake. I mean, they meet and fall in love, an angel of death and a mortal. It has been done. Not exactly new or that unbelievable after a few novels. Okay. I can get on board with this. Then Paris happens. The thing with her husband. The diamonds. The marriage. His brother's gifts. The sudden cancer. The whole tragedy. I'm sorry, say what? If this was a more wholesome novel I may have suspended my disbelief long enough to appreciate it. Unfortunately it just wasn't written well enough for me to do it. Much to be desired in the characterization and world-building departments. Certainly nothing worth suspending my belief for.

DNF'ed at little more than 55%. Why? 'Cause even after reading more than half this book I didn't care to know how it ended. For anyone. The main character is a washed out impression of a bad-ass witch/wizard. She tries but never too hard. Both romantic interests are about as interesting as dung beetles. And the supposed bad-guys? The only one who managed to remotely capture my attention was Lafitte and even him seemed to be too one-dimensional to actually keep my attention. To tell the truth? I was bored out of my mind most of the time. I couldn't connect with a single character. Neither the world-building or the plot was explored well. And basically, I just didn't want to waste any more of my time. Two stars simply for creativity.
