I'm not gonna comment about the non-romantic parts because I skimmed over them and considering that I've never read any of the previous books of the BDB, it's not like I would understand much...but what I did understand was good. It made me curious about what happened previously but most importantly it made curious about what will happen in the next book.

Needless is to say I absolutely loved the romantic parts and I'm not solely talking about Qhuinn and Blay although that one was definitely a breath of fresh air relatively to heterosexual relationships. Blay was always gentle and loyal and Qhuinn was f***ing amazing! I gotta say I would easily fall for him if he wasn't gay. Scratch that. I think I've fallen for him anyway!

Assail and Sola's relationship seem awfully cute, which is actually weird considering she's a thief and he's a drug dealer. Still. They do seem to be perfect for each other.

Xcor and Layla though...I'm conflicted. I don't know how or why Xcor is trying to kill Wrath so I can't really be against him or anything but I find myself wanting things to end well. I hope they do. The question is which way would they be truly well...

I'm not planning to suddenly rush to buy the other BDB books but I do intend to read them while anxiously waiting for the next one! This series really is interesting.

Review: Dark Time

After reading the premise, my expectations were pretty high and maybe that's why I only give a three star rating. I hoped something extraordinary that blew my mind and it was simply good. The writing was slow and actually painful in some places.

The main character is almost three hundred years old and the author wrote in a couple flashbacks to help understand the personal story. Although it helped immensely, it also bored me a little. I liked it but sometimes the description of places and people were too long and dense. Kind of jammed the flow. I was actually caught skimming through some of it. Sorry.

Another point that bothered me was some personality traits Maliha presented. One would think three hundred years would teach more to someone, no?

And Jake? Way too mysterious for me. Far as I'm concerned one mysterious character is enough and Maliha already has that role.

It was amazingly not that interesting...bordering on psychotic and boring at the same time. I'm guessing Cimil is supposed to bring cleverness, insight and cheerfulness to the book but her character only managed to irritate the hell out of me. I end up knowing the main characters about as much at the end as the beginning. Their love story is absolutely crazy and unrealistic and I really am wondering what was the purpose of this book...perhaps there isn't one and that's why the author removed the book from international listings. I had a really hard time to find it and had I known how idiotic this was, I wouldn't have bothered. Waste of my time.

Review: The Elsingham Portrait

It is quite different from the books I usually read but I'm glad I picked it up. It was a free read at Amazon and it's a somewhat historic novel combined with time travel, which I gotta admit I never felt curious about, so it was quite a feat to impress me but it did.

It's sweet, dramatic and interesting. There is no sudden burst of a happy ending or solution to all of the troubles. There is indeed a happy ending but it's different, not what the main character wanted. Basically, Kathryn wanted to return to her body and time but she only manages to have some friends believe who she is and her "husband" to accept it. She still didn't get her body back or managed to go back to her time. It is an important lesson to learn. Sometimes it is simply better to accept what you have and make the most of it. Although I have my suspicions she isn't much saddened by this considering she's in love with John (her supposed husband)...

A book heavily saturated with romance but, hey, there's a hot FBI agent, an art thief, a corrupt cop, twin sisters and some other interesting characters so I can't really complain. It's sassy, fresh and with lots of action. There's a multitude of chases, countries and bad-guys.

Review: Fang Girl

Oddly charming. Very fresh and entertaining. Funny. But also with a very weird ending. Not much romance either. Young and bubbly even when it's being dramatic. Fast-reading. Simple and easy to read. A perfect short story to teens.

But like I said before...the end is somewhat strange. There's not much of a conclusion, just a reprieve for the immediate problem presented throughout the book. The main ones keep untouched and it's rather frustrating.

Wow, that ending was so very good but so very depressing as well. I can't believe it ended with him not even talking to his father. I think there wasn't really a good ending for him and Anna.
There is literally no way to surpass death but I didn't exactly expected her to leave so suddenly either. I was thinking more along the lines of him saving her from Hell, Anna coming back with him and having a sweet, long and heart-breaking good-bye. Instead it was much like pulling a band-aid. They kissed and he let her go. To her heaven.

And he came back to his friends and family. Just like that. No complications. After all of it, it felt somewhat lacking. Like it should've shown more. About him. About his friends. About their future. About Anna. We are left wondering. Without any real information. Just a lot of speculation and hope.

It was a good ending though because any story with a ghost can't really end well, can it? The ghost is either set free to go to whatever place they go or they continue their cursed existence tethered to the living. Cas shows maturity by putting her happiness in front of his and letting her have her happy ending. It was brave.

Ghost Story. Our main character, Cas, is a seventeen-year-old ghost slayer just like his father... only he was brutally murdered when he was seven. Mother is a white witch. They move around a lot. Cas never bothers to make friends because they always relocate after Cas kills the ghost he came to kill and he simply think its not worth it.
In this new town, however, Cas ends with more than he bargained for. Friends, Anna, a couple murders and his father's killer.

It was exciting and dramatic. The human part of this story was actually more worrisome than the ghosts. We end up discovering how Anna died and who killed her. Some guys Cas knows from school try to kill him a couple times.

It is actually a pretty horrific picture of humanity. I gotta say that a guy trying to kill another because of a girl is f***ing idiotic. Then the guy gets killed by a ghost and of course his friends blame Cas. The victim. Like I said, idiotic.

Romance:

I've read maybe two other books about ghosts. They always end up making one of the ghosts being a love interest for the main character and it's precisely what happens here. Surprisingly though, it works great because Anna, our ghost, actually starts the story as a horrible girl who literally kills everyone who meets her and our protagonist, Cas, is a ghost slayer. Their first interaction is him ending up in her house wounded and her killing the guy who hurt him. Their second interaction is when he returns to the house and tries to kill her. You can imagine how that goes! She's stronger than any ghost he has ever met before and she kicks his ass but doesn't kill him. This sparks his curiosity and he just can't keep himself away from her.

It's cute to see the little details that show their love growing. The author didn't made it obvious instead opting for a subtle approach. It develops slowly and gets under your skin before you realize it even though you know Anna is dead for more than fifty years and they can't really be together. It was soft and sweet. More so when Cas confronts his father's killer and Anna sacrifices herself to save him.

Review: Undead to the World

Since the beggining of this book, I've been right alongside Jace. She lost her memory and I'd read her other books quite some time ago and my memory was faulty at best. I rediscovered everything at the same time Jace was. And boy was that stressful. There were some characters I remembered of course, namely Charlie and Cassius but mostly my light bulb only lit when Jace got some important piece of memory back.

It cost me so much watching her friends die. Even if they were only strangers with their memories. Logically I know they weren't the real deal, that they are safely tucked on their plane of existence but emotionally it still hurts. And Galahad was just so heartbreaking.

Last thirty pages were actually painful to read. So much death. So many things that could and did go wrong. Charlie loving Jace was so surprising. No, not surprising. I always knew he loved her. They are partners and best friends. It was obvious. Being in love with her though...Although that's not exactly right either is it? Charlie Allen, the "fake", really did fall in love with her but the real Charlie doesn't really confirms or denies if he feels it to.
We are simply left wondering.

Just like we are left wondering what Jace decides at the end. Did she accepted Cassius help to send her to her original plane? Did she decided to go back with Cassius to his or stay with the "fake" Charlie in this new plane?

Seems like a little overkill of choices if you ask me. All have their damned good and bad aspects. I understand her wanting to go home but I also think she fell in love with Cassius and his world. And suddenly she realizes she spent months in a new plane deeply believing she was part of it too. Way too complicated.

I began this book thinking this series was reaching its end and I got this conflicting feeling of glee and doom.

Then I read the end...Guess what? No ending to this series yet. I feel thrilled and disappointed at the same time. I had managed to come to accept it and now I feel kind of cheated. And the cliffhanger just makes it damn worse!

Review: Twice as Hot

Such an amazing end to this duology. Rome and Belle were better than ever. Finally Belle decided she actually wanted to be an agent and help capture the bad guys. Not to help Rome and his daughter but because she really felt like helping make a better world.

At the wedding, when everyone suddenly gasped and looked to the entrance...I kinda expected some bad guy to be there trying to kill her again. Fortunately it was only Jean-Luc. I liked him a lot and was sorry to see him hurting but I gotta say I would never wish Belle to leave Rome. I hope he really does have a future with Lexi. Not that I particularly like her. She seems way to manipulative for me to harbour any good feelings for her.

I wish Cody and Sherridan are happy and he never hurts her. She deserves it so much! I pity her past and can only cheer for her happiness with Cody.

Tanner and Elaine were kind of obvious since they met. Glad they were finally able to surpass her powers and touch each other. Glad Tanner finally lost his virginity!

Most part of this book was passed on edge. Always anxious and afraid something would happen and make things worse but overall it was perfect. The story arc built an appropriate feeling of anticipation for the amazing ending. Rome's memory loss was heart-breaking but ultimately proved everyone Belle and Rome really are meant to be together. It also assuaged her doubts about being the only one for him. Finally.

Review: Playing with Fire

My first book by Gena Showalter and I was pleasantly surprised I liked it. I'd heard about some of her books and they never produced much of a curious streak for me.

I've learned recently that I can actually hate a book from an author I usually love reading. Take Jeaniene Frost for example, I absolutely love her Night Huntress Series but I hated Night's Darkest Embrace. I couldn't get past the first 15 pages.

In that line of thought...Playing With Fire is definitely great. It's entertaining, fresh and funny. There's enough drama and action to leave the reader breathless. The main characters are so enjoyable and likeable that we're cheering for them all along even when do idiotic stuff. The main character's romantic interest, Rome, is a hot mysterious bad-ass and what more can one ask for? I gotta say I loved reading about him.

The main story is interesting and I think it is good enough to stand on its own and that's quite a feat considering recent literature published. The romance is just a plus instead of being the main focus and I adore it.

Review: Whiskey Sour

Ok so I stopped maybe about mid book and it's quite surprising because I like to read a story until the end no matter what but I was seriously bored outta my mind with all the police procedurals and other crap. Everything was extensively described and I just couldn't take any more.

Overall, the writing is kinda cramped. The events are poorly separated from each other. No breaks.

The main character, LT Jack Daniels is likeable but doesn't show much depth. No one does. Not even the serial killer. One would expect so, considering some parts are narrated from his point of view but apart from the gruesome details of what he does to his victims...there is nothing of actual interest.

Apart from making me afraid to get out of my house in the next few days...I found this book boring. It might've become better but I just couldn't make myself read it to the end.

I don’t find much more information on Anthony Anderson and eventually stop researching for lack of interesting leads. I spend Monday morning tailing him, instead. I leave the flat at the crack of dawn in my mother’s old blue Fiat Punto and drive all the way up to the Andersons’, my camera on the passenger seat.

I park a little farther up the road, turn off the engine and check the camera. Mr Anderson’s dark Mercedes passes me, at six thirty. I snap two pictures, before turning on the ignition and following him at a reasonable distance.

He goes straight to work and disappears in an underground car park that requires an ID card.

I open the car door and move to the boot. I reach down for one of my short winter duffle jackets and a black cap. I shrug both on and then grab a small parcel, before closing the boot and walking to the Credit Suisse building.

I force myself to walk in as casually as I can, and approach the reception with a look I hope is confident.

‘Morning,’ I say to the young man at the desk. ‘Urgent delivery for Anthony Anderson.’

The young lad narrows his eyes on the parcel and then looks me up and down. I square my jaw. Time to see whether my plan’s going to work.

I pinned a badge on my chest. I made it up on my laptop, with a fake logistic company name and logo, and my name and picture. The cap on my head bears the same logo. It’s actually one of my old white caps that I craftily hand-painted last night.

‘Sure,’ the man says with an easy smile. ‘Leave it here; I’ll see that it’s delivered with the morning mail.’

‘Sorry, but it’s hand delivery only.’ I shrug apologetically.

‘Fine.’ The man motions to one of the men minding the elevator. ‘He’ll escort you.’

That’s not what I had planned. I smile nonetheless and follow the bulky man through the lobby.

The elevator doors close after us and I stand immobile in a corner. Porca vacca, Lexa! Why didn’t you think it through? I’ve been too hasty again. How could I think that they would just let me wander the hallways on my own? My cover will be blown if Anderson catches sight of me, and there I am, being escorted straight to him. Way to go, Lexa!

My escort takes me to an office and we stop in front of a secretary.

‘Parcel for Mr Anderson,’ I tell her, fighting hard to prevent my voice from quivering.

He has to be here, just behind the large wooden doors that bear his name. She’s going to call him and he’ll come right out and see me and then it’ll be goodnight Vienna!

We begin our walk, faster this time, and the cold wind has nothing on the chill between us. Conversation is non-existent, and I have no clue how to break the silence, or if I should even try. We are almost to the gallery, and a knot has formed in my stomach at the prospect of an awkward goodbye, when he suddenly grabs me and pulls me into a small enclave of a deserted office rental. Before I can fully grasp what is happening, I am against the wall, hidden from the street and he is in front of me, enclosing me in the tiny space. I blink up into his burning stare and I think I might combust. His scent, his warmth, his hard body, is all around me, but he is not touching me. I want him to touch me. 

He presses his hand to the concrete wall above my head when I want it on my body. “You don’t belong here, Sara.”

The words are unexpected, a hard punch in the chest. “What? I don’t understand.”

“This job is wrong for you.” 

I shake my head. I don’t belong? Coming from Chris, an established artist, I feel inferior, rejected. “You asked me why I wasn’t following my heart. Why I wasn’t pursuing what I love. I am. That’s what I’m doing.”

This place. I don’t know what he’s telling me. Does he mean this gallery? This city? Has he judged me not worthy of his inner circle? 

“Look, Sara.” He hesitates, and lifts his head to the sky, seeming to struggle for words before fixing me with a turbulent look. “I’m trying to protect you here. This world you’ve strayed into is filled with dark, messed up, arrogant assholes who will play with your mind and use you until there is nothing else left for you to recognize in yourself.”

“Are you one of those dark, messed up, arrogant assholes?”

He stares down at me, and I barely recognize the hard lines of his face, the glint in his eyes, as belonging to the man I’ve just had lunch with. His gaze sweeps my lips, lingers, and the swell of response and longing in me is instant, overwhelming. He reaches up and strokes his thumb over my bottom lip. Every nerve ending in my body responds and it’s all I can do not to touch him, to grab his hand, but something holds me back. I am lost in this man, in his stare, in some spellbinding, dark whirlwind of…what? Lust, desire, torment? Seconds tick eternally and so does the silence. I want to hold him, to stop whatever I sense is coming but I cannot. 

“I’m worse.” He pushes off the wall, and is gone. He is gone. I am alone against the wall, aching with a fire that has nothing to do with the meal we shared. My lashes flutter, my fingers touch my lip where he touched me. He has warned me away from Mark, from the gallery, from him, and he has failed. I cannot turn away. I am here and I am going nowhere.

This story is so damn complicated! I mean...I love it but it's so complex its actually hard to process certain things. So much cross-breeding and experiments and characters that appear for the briefest of times only to be killed right afterwards...wow.

Its hard to keep up let me tell you!

The romance/sex part is interesting but there's so much of it that its just kinda of expected and stopped impacting on the main part of the book.

Quinn is proving to be somewhat unreliable about his relationship with Riley. Kellen, the new alpha interest, is cute but never showed up much.

Kade, the horse-shifter was the most interesting because he actually cared for her enough to give her peace and rest when she needed it the most.

Everyone else just seems to want a part of her. Either sex,blood, kids or DNA. It's very disturbing. Only her brother seems to like her no matter what.

Overall:

The main characters. They all seemed well developed and are very likeable. I think, however, that the connection between Rhoan and Riley was not fully developed. They are twins and pack. I think they should present a more powerful connection between each other.

Quinn was a nice surprise and I can admit I even appreciate his stubbornness not to fully give in to Riley.

Jack seems like a genius mastermind inside a little package and I like him.

I liked Kelly too. I am sad to see her go so soon.

Misha seemed like a nice guy but I guess I was fooled just like Riley. Talon never did though. I never liked him no matter Riley's excuses. He just seemed to get on my nerves since the very beginning and Riley was an idiot to never suspect the damn champagne. That rang so many warning bells inside my head.

Gaultier seemed like an important piece at first and he heavily leaned on the creepy factor so I gotta say I'm not very interested in reading more about him but I somehow suspect he'll be a huge presence in the next book. Can't say I actually look forward that little tidbit.

I was a little shocked with the sex factor in this book. I'm not a puritan. I have read books that make me blush just by remembering but I was surprised with the force the author put in the moon heat. I gotta say it blew my mind. The fact that a wolf either gives up control and literally fucks any available or simply gets blood-lust and tries to go on a bloodbath. Wow. It's a totally new approach to the moon phase. I was thinking more along the lines of...having less control over emotions and not simply want to mate at a simple touch or gaze. But hey it works. I'm anxious to learn more!

So...No cliffhanger this time. Not much of one anyway. I still keep wanting to read the next one as soon as possible though. These books are so damn addictive!

Secret's life just gets better and better. The more powerful she is, the more enemies she gets. I gotta say after constant betrayals I'd be pretty wary and tired of every f***ing person in my life but somehow Secret just keeps going and going.

Desmond's reaction to her werewolf marriage with Lucas was pretty understandable and predictable. C'amon! The man was always going to be upset by her wedding be it human or werewolf. A werewolf one simply stated more clearly she was Lucas that's all. No way was he gonna be okay by that after the meltdown he had when they mated.

Lucas missing his own wedding though...men. That was low! Yes, he sent Morgan to warn Secret without knowing she was a traitor...but flying to Louisiana on his wedding day without telling her! Leaving her to deal with the most expected ceremony of the year alone without a heads-up. Worse! Leaving her at all. Short of death there is no possible good reason to leave a person waiting for you at the altar. And right after she did absolutely everything for him. Wow. That was either cold or f***ing moronic. I'm thinking both. But more moronic would be to actually forgive him. Just saying...I really hope she doesn't.

I have nothing against werewolves per se but I always had a certain difficulty accepting pack mentality. The idea of being subservient to someone...just rubs me in all the wrong places. I wasn't overly thrilled by the soul bond and all that crap but I went with it because it was part of Secret and she seemed to enjoy the family concept even if their rules and laws baffled her (and me for that matter). She loves Desmond but also somehow loves Lucas and of course also loves the pack so she does what's better for everyone and mates with Lucas. Ok. Confusing but I get it. Not my preferred choice of events but...I could live with it.
And then Lucas never shows up for his wedding. Leaves her alone despite knowing there is someone trying to kill her. Someone who knows her every step and doesn't have a problem with public places! He leaves her f***ing alone to deal with a crazed werewolf with a group of contracted assassins trying to snuff her life in front of huge wedding crowd. Congratulations Lucas Rain! You couldn't have gone faster to my sh*t list if you had tried.

I'm not saying I trust the vampires...for instance I just know Brigit being a life locker for Alexandre Peyton is just going to backfire enormously. It cannot be helped. It just screams IDIOTIC! And Sig with his ulterior motives and all the crap he never tells Secret...but I honestly prefer them right now. I keep missing Sig. I like Holden too but Sig just seems too god damn fascinating! I keep expecting him to make some kind of move on her but he never does and it just makes me more and more excited everytime he shows up.
Besides...Vampire politics have been more forthcoming and simple than the Werewolves. I always thought it would be the other way around.

Anyway. Overall reaction to this book was something along the lines:

Oh. My. God.

Lucas Rain. You did not!

Wow. Desmond...that was low.

And...

Go Holden! GO!

Well I have to recognize a well delivered suspenseful novel. And the cliffhanger was...wow. I cannot wait to read the next book. It has been awhile since I've last seen such great ending. It was out of the blue and caught me totally by surprise. I gotta admit I never saw that one coming...and the mother thing? Nope.

The main character seems like someone I'd like to know. She's an assassin for the vampire council but she's not yet too hardened by her job. She doesn't dwell and whines about stuff she can't prevent.

Her being a were/vampire hybrid is a novelty worth reading about.

Very short story but pleasant. Keeps things simple and entertaining. It's also a very light read. There isn't much development of characters or plot. It goes straight to the point and ends well. The writing flows smoothly and captivates the reader until de end. It leaves the reader with a want for more unfortunately.

Review: Measure of Strength

Measure of Strength by Caethes Faron

Wonderful book. I would have given it a 5 star rating if not for the fact that I wanted to read more about what their lives would be with Kale a free man and it was kind of shorted out. I am glad Renee didn't even made an appearance though. I was pissed at her from the 1st book and I gotta say she would have been more happy if she hadn't separated Jason from Kale. I can't seem to shake the impression that because she wanted everything from Jason she ended having nothing. Although the idea of divorce never gets hinted at so she will apparently keep married to him simply not really a part of his life.

I loved seeing them together again. Kale kept blaming Jason for his treatment for those 3 years they were apart but I think it was both their fault. They both made mistakes and I was happy to read they'll overcome them together. Martin becoming the company's president was a surprise but a pleasant one! I thought Jason would take Sophie and Martin with them but I guess it sort of makes sense. It was gratifying to read such a wonderful ending.

Thank you Ms. Caethes Faron. You did an amazing job. It was brilliant.

This a book with sexual content between two men so if it's not your type of book...please retreat while it's safe!

I find this book so much interesting. I loved to see the dynamic between Kale and Jason develop. It was dramatic, painful, happy and so very sweet. It truly broke my heart seeing them go in different directions. I understand Kale's sacrifice so Jason could have a chance at being happy...but ultimately he's just making it worse because he pretty much destroys the only thing Jason had left. Their relationship. Their love for each other.

And while I also understand Renee...where she is coming from and how she loves Jason and wants Jason to love her and only her, I can't keep thinking that Jason was right the first time she refused to marry him if he kept Kale: if she really loved him she wouldn't have wanted to make him give up someone he loved so much. Like Kale was obviously trying to do. He set Renee and Jason together and he always tried to help them even though it was killing him inside.

I kinda liked her and pitied her at the beginning but now..I don't hate her exactly. More like I don't care if she suddenly disappears of this story altogether!

Review: Haunted

Haunted by Jeanne C. Stein

I simply have loved all Anna Strong books so far...some more than others but still. Anna Strong is such a great character, always struggling to keep her moral human code intact while also being aware of her duty to protect others.

This book starts with Anna alone on Christmas Eve because she's way too tired to pretend she's human. She decides to go to Culebra's bar, who is another awesome character we get know substantially more than on any of the other books. Culebra tells her about his past as an assassin and Anna is pretty upset and leaves. The next day her family shows up to spend Christmas with her. Anna exchanges Christmas wishes with Stephen, her boyfriend, who I gotta admit I didn't remember one bit from Crossroads. Her family leaves a couple days after Christmas and soon after Frey shows up with John-John. I was pleasantly surprised Frey came to spend time with Anna and tell her he is thinking about moving back to San Diego with the kid to be with Anna. I actually dreamed about it after finishing Crossroads last year. I keep cheering for them to be together. I think he understands Anna better than she understands herself. He is so supportive of her! I truly adore him .Her boyfriend Stephen on the other hand...she acted badly towards him by not telling him she was helping Culebra but his actions weren't exactly good either...If you have a girlfriend who says she has to take care of some business and then don't hear from her again in days...You get worried. You call. You leave messages. You don't accept a job is DC, pack and leave before she returns and then proceed to say she's a bitch.

Anyway after Frey leaves, Anna decides to go talk to Culebra and helps a guy along the way. When she gets to Beso De La Muerte (Culebra's bar), she's surprised Culebra knows the guy. He asks Anna to leave and she does reluctantly. She phones Max, her DEA ex, about her suspicions and they agree to return to the bar. They get there and the bar is empty. They follow the trail. Culebra notices them and tell them he needs to help the guy. Anna ends up saying yes too...and then all hell breaks loose.

It involves Mexican gangs, shooting, betrayals and what not. In the end we say goodbye to Max, who dies at the end from his injuries in the last battle with the Pablo, the Cartel's boss. Culebra gains a daughter in Adelita, a girl they helped save from the cartel and Anna returns home to an empty house except for all the stuff Stephen returned her. I was not sorry to see him go.

Anna dreams with Max. He says goodbye. She soon leaves to go after Frey.

I gotta say that last part was my favorite. I kept thinking Frey would call her or something along the book but he never did so I was very happy when in the end Anna decided it was time to go to him. I hope they get together finally! I can't believe I have months to endure until the release of the next book!

Review: Five

Five by Christie Rich

Surprisingly good. A little over dramatic for my tastes but interesting enough to keep me going. The characters are okay, specially the men. They were so yummy.

The storyline felt fresh and exciting. It is a brand new side of the faerie world, apart from the hot lords because I've never actually read about an ugly fae. Not really. The authors always manage to make them mouth-watering and I can't say I don't like it!

Rayla, the main-character, is somewhat frustrating but I don't exactly hate her so that's a plus. Christie presents an action packed world filled with magic and the fact that Rayla is learning about everything at the same time as the reader is pretty cool.

I can't wait to get my hands on the next one!
